Rotarians Engaged in Alleviating Childhood Hunger

Filling Backpack Bags...
Each Tuesday morning during the Warren County School year, Breakfast Rotarians are busy by 6:45 AM, filling bags of food for students. Many children in Warren County go home each evening having had their last meal at lunch at school. Weekends are more of the same. The statistics are alarming. Taking action, Breakfast Rotarians run an assembly line filling bags with items such as puddings, instant oatmeal, pop tarts, applesauce, juice boxes, and cheese and crackers. This program is called the FUEL program. Children are recommended for the service via their school counselor. The program is discreet. Confidentiality is crucial. The school counselor or other designated staff member places the bag of food in the child’s backpack for the weekend. The goal is for the child to have easy access to food while away from school. Currently each school’s FUEL program is administered by a church or civic organization. Breakfast Rotary funds their portion of the program from the sales from the drink booth at Main Street Live. Others are funded by donations and various fund raisers. Donations are always welcomed. School counselor, Holly Luna commented, “Our resources are limited. With more donations we can definitely serve more children. There is always a need.” Breakfast Rotary’s FUEL drop off/donation site is the Methodist Church on Main Street. If you would like to donate to a FUEL program in your area, please see the school counselor. He /she will make sure your food item is delivered to the FUEL program. Together, we can eliminate childhood hunger.
